8 Top Tips For Trainee PE Teachers

Here are 8 top tips for trainee PE teachers:

  1. Ensure you have a broad understanding of all sports to ensure you are capable of officiating a variety of sporting fixtures.
  2. Get a small exercise book and write different drills in it to create a drill book. You would be surprised about how many of the same drills can be repeated in different sports.
  3. Athletics: make a crib sheet/card with appropriate weights/distances and a national school track and field points score card so that you know how high and far apart hurdles should be and what weight discus they should be throwing for example. You can use the crib sheet to see if your students are doing well compared to national averages and how they would score if you entered them into the competition. It also helps with the selection!
  4. If the kettle is empty, fill it and boil. Always offer to make someone else a drink if you’re making one for yourself.
  5. Get involved in extracurricular in your own time. Not in a playing capacity but in a coaching capacity.
  6. Know your students and get them active as much as possible.
  7. Limit the verbal instructions and demo first.
  8. Demonstrate what you want them to do, using students to help them understand tasks better.
