Although this year has been a challenging one for everyone, there have been a lot of personal and professional successes too. Here’s a quick snapshot of how some of our former trainees have been getting on.
We started by getting some news from Maddie, who trained to teach English with us last year. She is thoroughly enjoying teaching, her colleagues are fantastically supportive and her online debating club has been so successful that she has become the Debate and Oracy Lead across the academy. It’s working with students and seeing their skills develop that Maddie finds most rewarding though. She tells us “Teaching is honestly wonderful, even online! My students are funny things, and we often talk through breaks about our favourite books etc.! Honestly, it’s a joy to be a teacher!”
Joanne is also finding her career extremely rewarding. After training to teach Mathematics with BEC Teacher Training in 2017 she has taken advantage of every opportunity and built up an impressive portfolio of experience, mentoring trainees and newly qualified teachers, helping out with the Duke of Edinburgh’s award, accompanying the ski trip and taking up a pastoral role as assistant head of year. She’s also enjoyed many opportunities for additional training, both for teaching A-level Mathematics and for school leadership. This last has been especially useful for her new role as second in the department in a large secondary school. Despite a busy year on the personal front getting married and moving house, Joanne tells us she’s really enjoying life as a teacher and can’t see herself doing anything else. Like many of our former trainees, she’s still in touch with colleagues from the training programme, which she feels gave an exceptionally good foundation for her career: ‘I definitely feel as if I was way more set up for teaching than some other NQTs having come from the BEC Teacher Training’. Joe couldn’t agree more. He trained in 2018 and is still working at the same school, having now progressed to Head of Drama and Music. He tells us: ‘I’m doing really well and have BEC Teacher Training to thank for it – without the first-hand/first-class experience you gave me I wouldn’t have progressed as quickly in my career, I’m very happy. I would recommend BEC Teacher Training to anyone
Like Joe and Joanne, many of our trainees make rapid progress in their careers. Kevin trained in 2019 and is already looking for Head of Department roles. He tells us teaching is a dream come true for him. ‘Being a French teacher is something I have always wanted to be and the BEC Teacher Training helped me achieve this. I am now working as a French teacher in London and I do not see myself working anywhere else. I am extremely grateful for having had so many different mentors during my training year to guide me and give me feedback. I also thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity I had to observe so many different lessons from a variety of subjects. When I left my training year, I was confident that I had acquired all the skills needed to become a successful teacher and I am now looking at becoming a Head of a Department to be able to pass on everything I have learned to others’.
